Local Law Enforcement & Immigration

In Oregon, state laws regulate the relationship between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities, not individual cities. The Coburg Police Department, like other local law enforcement agencies in Oregon, is guided by state statutes that limit their cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. Officers do not participate in routine immigration investigations or enforcement activities are prohibited from detaining individuals solely for civil violations of federal immigration laws. Officers are also restricted from inquiring about an individual's immigration status unless it is directly related to a criminal investigation.

Local law enforcement agencies cannot use public resources to enforce federal immigration laws, and they are prohibited from providing information to federal immigration authorities except in specific circumstances, such as responding to a court subpoena. These policies aim to ensure that all individuals, regardless of their immigration status, feel secure in reporting crimes and cooperating with law enforcement without fear of immigration-related consequences.
